Our Dev team will soon release the next firmware upgrade.

For all Cybooks (Gen3 and Opus), you will have a possibility to download 2 firmware.

Here are some of the new features that will brighten up your reading experience:

Firmware 1.5: Mobipocket.

- Support of Mobipocket prc files.

- Support of non DRMed prc and pdf files.

- Support of html, txt, jpeg, png, gif.

- 12 font sizes on all prc, html and txt files.

- Rotation of the page and Zoom from 50 to 100%.

- Browsing mode : new interface presentation.

- Possibility to create your own folders.

- Possibility to speed-up the page turn (in library-mode and in a book)

- Possibility to zoom / change font size by pressing + or – button (Cybook Gen3), by pressing simultaneously menu and one of the page forward/backward button (Cybook Opus).

- Possibility to delete files by pressing delete button (Cybook Gen3), by going through the menu (Cybook Gen3 and Cybook Opus).

Firmware 2.0: Adobe Digital Edition

- Support of Adobe Digital Edition epub and pdf files.

- Support of non DRMed epub and pdf files.

- Support of html, txt, jpeg, png, gif.

- 12 font sizes on all epub, txt, html files.

- Rotation of the page and Zoom from 50 to 100%.

- For pdf files: hyperlinks are now activated and the covers are displayed on the library page.

- Browsing mode: new interface presentation.

- Possibility to create your own folders.

- Possibility to speed-up the page turn by maintening the pressure on a page turn button (in library-mode and in a book).

- Possibility to zoom / change font size by pressing + or – (Cybook Gen3), by pressing menu and one of the page forward/backward button (Cybook Opus).

- Possibility to delete files by pressing delete button (Cybook Gen3), by going through the menu (Cybook Gen3 and Cybook Opus).

Bookeen present at MobileRead meetup in Paris

Hello,

As you may know, we are on the verge to release our new Cybook Opus and will introduce it to the MobileRead community during their French meetup in Paris. There will be some hands-on demos and Bookeen people will be there to answer your questions.

In parallel, we will propose (in avant-première and during the meet-up) to Cybook GEN3 possessors to upgrade their devices with the - long awaited - new firmware.

So don't forget your Cybooks!

Adobe PDF and EPUB will be present in Bookeen products

Bookeen has signed an agreement with Adobe to license the Adobe Reader Mobile SDK for its products.
The new software engine delivers support for reflowable PDF technology, Adobe’s content protection technology, as well as the EPUB file format, an XML-based eBook standard with broad support from the publishing industry.
The Bookeen products will be compatible with Adobe Digital Edition Desktop application (compatible both on PCs and Macs) enabling users to acquire and download their content from a variety of sources.
Both the PDF and EPUB support will become available through a software release scheduled in quarter 1 2009, more details will follow later.

From now on you can find 5 eBooks demo from Foolstrip in your Cybook.
Foolstrip is a French comic’s publisher coming from the web and going imprint with some best seller. For this latest bundle, Foolstrip has worked directly to adapt their comics to the Cybook format.
This is just a beginning in exploring the comic’s e-reading performance.

We also add a little helper for those who are seeking for a Cybook demonstration. As you can see on the right part of the screen is a map which may help you to find where to buy a Cybook in the nearest brick-and-mortar shop. If you are looking for a complete resellers’ list, you will find it here.

What's New in Version 1.2 (Build 796)

New: user interface now available in 6 languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian & Dutch).
Improvement: reduced power consumption.
Improvement: reduced memory usage.
New: zoom menu for PDF files.
Improvement: fast panning within PDF files.
Improvement: general stability and performance.
Fix: SD card detection.
Fix: last page saved for files with UTF8 (non ANSI) names.
New: possibility to restore factory settings (also deletes personal data in internal memory). To do so, press volume- while switching off.

How to Download

From your computer, visit http://www.bookeen.com/support.
Login and download the upgrade file.
Extract the content of the downloaded zip file.
You should get a single file “update_kernel”; this is the firmware upgrade utility.
Copy the file “update_kernel” to the root of an SD card.

How to Install

Make sure your Cybook has enough power to operate.
Switch off your device.
Insert the SD card into your Cybook.
Switch on your device.
When the boot image is visible (Cybook & Bookeen logotypes), press the center key of the navigation button and keep it pressed for a few seconds until the screen flashes.
When the screen flashes, you can release the key; the upgrade process is launched.
Only the needed sections are updated. The upgrade should be completed after a couple of minutes.
When the upgrade is completed, the Cybook starts normally.
Delete the file “update_kernel” from the SD card and from your computer. This file will not be useful anymore.
Congratulations! Your Cybook has been upgraded with version 1.2.

How to Check my Cybook Version

Open the contextual menu.
Open "Advanced…", then "About…".
"Boo Reader" section shows "Version: x.y (build z)".

The Old Brown version has been discontinued. Those new covers, inspired from customers feedback, are easier to handle. From now, you are able to choose among 4 colors of leather cover plus the one that is now join to the Deluxe Pack.

Cybook Gen3 build release - battery life extension -

The firmware 1.1 got a new build (708). It has been released today via our website: www.bookeen.com/support
The firmware 1.1 previous build had experienced some battery problems for several devices. Build 708 will fix that regression and also provide you with the whole version of firmware 1.1 with a little plus: hyphenation support in mobipocket files. Also, the author's name will now appear in the header of your book if indicated in the book's description.
The download modus operandi will be the same as for the last release.

It’s been 6 months that we brought the Cybook Gen3 to you. Even with being 4 time out-of-stock, we do continue to share with you the same passion for digital reading. Today, we are excited to announce that Cybook is in stock and ready for shipment within 14 business days.

With this new batch, Bookeen has introduced some hardware and software improvements in Cybook. These elements will be explained and developed in a future post.

Our team is actually working on the development of the new firmware. We are late for that first official update, nevertheless we are doing all that we can to supply you rapidly with your new firmware, integrating a maximum of new feature and bug fixes.

A first hint about what will be integrated in this upgrade is that it will sensibly change the navigation button management.

Cybook in university library

Angers’ university library (France), is now sharing a new idea: experimentation on process and use of the Cybook Gen3 for the students.

They just got equipped with a dozen of Cybooks. Daniel Bourrion (librarian in charge of the digital library) will put Cybooks in students’ hands, allowing a better understanding of the use of eReaders on campus. Only in internal loan for the moment, the Cybook Gen3 will be available to students once system and uses be clearly established.

La BU d’Angers vient de s’équiper d’une dizaine de Cybooks.

L’expérimentation menée par Daniel Bourrion (conservateur des bibliothèques responsable de la bibliothèque numérique) va permettre de placer dans les mains des étudiants les Cybooks Gen3 et de mieux comprendre l’usage des readers en université. Bookeen is now close from gathering 18 dealers in 11 different countries.

You can find the Cybook Gen3 both on specialized online retailers like Justread in Germany or AppoloXXI in Spain, and generalist online sites as Bow.it in Italy, Develop-it in Belgium or Dicoland in France. Bookshops are also reselling the device. Now, you can find the Cybook Gen3 in physical stores like Feltrinelli in Italy and L’appel du livre in France but also on online eBook retailers like Elittera in Norway and Booksonboard for the North American territory.

Lately, you can also find the Cybook Gen3 in outlets 5sur5 Powerstore, French network dedicated to new communication technologies, as well as on the Polish and Czech specialist stores eMedia and Acomp.

First of all, with almost one month late, best wishes 2008 to all of you.

This year 2007 has been tremendous for Bookeen. Against all odds, we have released our Cybook Gen3 almost on time and the device has met a smashing success. As already announced several times before, we have been overwhelmed by the demand and we all thank you for this success. The first reactions of our customers and professionals have been great obtaining a 9 out of 10 from TrustedReviews with a nice "Of all the dedicated eBook readers I've seen this is definitely the best".

We have also noted all the remarks of our first customers : folder support, delete key, better sound interface and our dev team is already working on them. Please note that, even if we are not very responsive, we always read all your emails and take in account your feedback.

Since our creation in 2003, Bookeen has always tried to keep in touch with its customers and to offer a reactive and efficient customer support. Concerning this part of our job, we clearly have not met our quality imperatives for the Cybook Gen3 release. We are now making all the necessary decisions to have a customer support department running properly.

In parrallel of our online store, a reseller network has grown much faster than expected and right now almost 11 stores (both web and brick and mortar) are selling the Cybook Gen3. This network is increasing every week and we invite everyone interested by selling the Cybook to get in touch with us.

We have also been part of several great initiatives like the NAEB buyer's club and the Cluster21 publisher pack. I will describe these two initiatives in future posts.

We will definitely be more active on this blog and give you fresh news about Bookeen and Cybook Gen3 in the next few days.

Most of the first Cybook users did notice that the Cybook Gen3 user's guide was not in the Cybook as described in the Quick Start Guide.

With some days late, here is the Mobipocket version of the Cybook Gen3 user's guide.

Download the eBook file here.

For those who have a Cybook:
- Switch on your Cybook.
- Connect your Cybook Gen3 to your computer using your USB cable.
- Let the device mount as an external mass storage device.
- Drag and drop the file in the eBooks folder..
- Unplug the Cybook.
- On the Cybook, choose the user's guide and press the OK button.
- Read.

For those who have not yet a Cybook, download the file and double-click on it. If Mobipocket is installed on your computer, you can read it. For the others install Mobipocket first(*).

ePaper art on Expo in Paris

The first ePaper Artwork has been presented during "les Elysées de l'art" a famous art exhibition in Paris. It's our friend and artist Gilles Guias who proposes his artwork.
During the exhibition , most of the people who were looking closely at the artwork are litteraly stuned when the image changes.

Beta Mobipocket Desktop Reader supports Cybook Gen3

The Mobipocket team has just released a new beta version of the Mobipocket desktop reader for XP and Vista. This new version supports the Cybook Gen3.

Once pluged to your computer, the Cybook Gen3 will be automatically identified and registered as one of your reading devices. After your ebooks have been downloaded from any of the Mobipocket ebook retailers (Mobipocket, Fictionwise, etc.), your books are directly transfered to your Cybook.

The eNews feature will aslo allow you to synchronize your Cybook with feeds chosen among hundred thousands of RSS and eNews sources just by connecting your Cybook to your computer.

Additionally, you can import Office, Pdf, Html, Txt, Chm & Ocf documents.

PS: Currently, the Mobipocket ebook catalogue contains almost 55,000 titles and proposes more than 340,000 feeds.
